My First Semester As A College Student - 842 Words

As expected my first semester as a college student was an adjustment. Learning to live with roommates, increased academic rigor, and being on my own for the first time all took some getting used to. Despite a few hiccups along the way, I would say that my adjustment to life as a college student went fairly smoothly. Although, there are a few areas that I still need to work on. For example, throughout high school, I rarely needed to study to achieve the grades I desired. However, I learned quickly that this was not going to work in college. Learning how to study is something I am still working on, but my studying strategies have improved greatly compared to where they were at the beginning of the year. Slowly but surely I am discovering†¦show more content†¦I adored my sophomore English teacher, and she really helped to improve and enhance my writing ability and style. However, my English teachers my junior and senior year did not do much to improve my writing. My junior year I got a 100% on every single essay I wrote because our teacher graded mainly on completion. Furthermore, my senior year I took humanities for English, and we only wrote one essay the entire year. As a result, I felt like my writing ability decreased, and I lost confidence in my writing. After taking English 101, I feel as though my writing ability has improved. Additionally, I have regained some of my confidence as a writer. One area that I can improve upon in my writing is that I still tend to make grammatical errors. A grammatical error that I have made multiple times in this class as well as others concerns quotes. When quoting something, I introduce it with an improper punctuation, or I have an improper quotation in the citation. In general, punctuation is something that I need to work on. Furthermore, in my peer edits, Guillermo often noted that at times my writing becomes repetitive. Typically, this is something that I do not catch on my own. However, after reading his comm ents, I have realized that I can be repetitive at times. Additionally, Jacqueline often remarked that I needed to further explain or provide greater detail. This is something I struggle with.
